Pollen is a protein source for the colony, but a healthy hive collects far more than it needs — which is exactly what makes harvesting some of it worthwhile without hurting the bees. This trap mounts to the hive entrance and knocks pollen pellets off returning foragers' legs as they squeeze through, collecting it in a tray below for you to gather.
Close off any other hive entrances first so bees are forced through the trap. Leave the door setting consistent for several days at a time — bees adjust better to a stable configuration than one that changes daily. Empty the collection tray daily or every other day to keep the pollen fresh and prevent mold or pest buildup.
