A hive entrance sized for summer is too wide for a small or new colony to defend the rest of the year. This wooden entrance reducer slides into the hive's front opening and narrows it down, so a smaller workforce of guard bees can actually cover the doorway against robbing bees, wasps, and mice.
Use it on new packages, nucs, and splits when colony numbers are low, and again in fall and winter when a full-size entrance lets in more cold air and more mice than a small cluster can fend off. Pull it in late spring once the colony is strong enough to guard a full-width entrance on its own.
