A migratory cover does the same job as a telescoping cover — keeps rain and sun off the top of the hive — but it sits flush with the box instead of overhanging the sides. That flush fit is the whole point: migratory covers stack tighter on a truck or trailer, which is why commercial and sideline beekeepers who move hives between yards tend to prefer them.
Flush covers don't shed water as well as a telescoping cover with an overhang — rain can find its way to the edges more easily over time. If your hives stay in one place year-round, we'd point you to the telescoping cover instead. If you're moving hives regularly, the migratory cover's stackability wins.
