The History: Introduced by Senator William H. Wharton in November 1838 and officially adopted by the Third Congress of the Republic of Texas on January 25, 1839, the iconic "Lone Star Flag" was designed to represent the sovereign republic before Texas joined the United States in 1845.
The Design: The Texas Flag features a vertical blue stripe on the hoist edge taking up one-third of the flag's length. Two equal horizontal stripes of white over red finish out the flag emerging from the blue stripe all the way to the fly edge. Centered inside the blue hoist field sits a single "lone" white five-pointed star (a design element so famous that it earned the state its official nickname).
The specific colors match those of the flag of the United States, carrying symbolic meanings: blue stands for loyalty, white symbolizes purity, and red represents bravery.
