Netherlands (Dutch) Flag

3' x 5' polyester Netherlands Flag (often mistakenly called Holland) with two grommets, double-stitched top and bottom edges, and a triple-stitched fly edge to reduce fraying.

✍️ The Design: Formally recognized by royal decree in 1937, the Dutch tricolor is one of the oldest horizontal tricolor flags in continuous use on earth. The layout features three equal horizontal bands of red, white, and blue (known in Dutch as Rood-Wit-Blauw).

The design evolved directly from the 16th-century Prinsenvlag (Prince's Flag) used during the Dutch Revolt, which eventually transitioned into the Statenvlag (State's Flag). You'll see these color meanings repeated everywhere, but the Dutch government has never officially assigned any meanings. The colors come from the Prince's Flag, and the symbolism got attached later:

🟥 The top red stripe (originally orange, named for the House of Orange) represents bravery and the nation's struggle for independence.

⬜️ The middle white stripe symbolizes peace, freedom, and honesty.

🟦 The bottom blue stripe stands for loyalty, justice, and the country's historic connection to the sea.

Flag Nerd Fact: the Dutch flag heavily influenced international vexillology! It inspired the famous French tricolor 🇫🇷, and when Peter the Great studied Dutch shipbuilding to build the Russian navy, he adopted a similar scheme which later spawned the Pan-Slavic color family across Eastern Europe. Additionally, the flag is almost identical to the flag of Luxembourg 🇱🇺, which uses the exact same layout but features a slightly lighter shade of blue.

The Kingdom also maintains historical ties with constituent partners like Aruba and Curaçao.
